A Delay Estimation Technique for Single and Double-track Railroads

چکیده
To route and schedule trains over a large complex network can be computationally intensive. One way to reduce complexity could be to “aggregate” suitable sections of a network. In this paper, we present a simulation-based technique to generate delay estimates over track segments as a function of traffic conditions, as well as network topology. We test our technique by comparing the delay estimates obtained for a network in Los Angeles with the delays obtained from the simulation model developed by Lu et al. (2004), which has been shown to be representative of the real-world delay values. Railway dispatchers could route and schedule freight trains over large networks by using our technique to estimate delay across aggregated network sections. ∗Corresponding author

Incremental Capacity in Transitioning from Double to Triple Track on Shared Rail Corridors
The North American freight railroad network is projected to experience rising transportation demand in the coming decades, leading to increased congestion on many rail lines. Capacity is further strained by increased interest in increasing the speed and frequency of passenger service on shared rail corridors. Since passenger trains in North America predominantly operate on corridors where freig...
متن کاملStrategies for Effective Rail Track Capacity Usage
In the United States, railways are the major means to trans-continentally move goods from ports to the various inland destinations. Due to mergers and abandonment of rail lines, there has been a reduction in the track capacity, concentrating rail traffic to fewer lines. In addition to this, booming trade with Pacific Rim nations has seen the annual trade in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Bea...
متن کاملImpact of Passenger Trains in Double Track Networks
North American freight railroads are expected to experience increasing capacity constraints across their networks. To help plan for this increased traffic, railroads use simulation software to analyze the benefits of capacity expansion projects. Simultaneous operation of heterogeneous traffic further increases delay relative to additional homogenous traffic. Additional passenger trains can caus...
متن کاملMitigating train-type heterogeneity on a single-track line
North American railroads are experiencing growth in traffic demand and increasingly need to expand capacity on their lines; this will require changes in the mode of operation and infrastructure. Infrastructure expansion requires long lead times and is capital-intensive. Alternatively, some additional capacity may be achieved by alteration of the mode of operation which is often less expensive a...
متن کاملSiding Spacing and the Incremental Capacity of the Transition from Single to Double Track
The North American freight railroad network is projected to experience rising transportation demand in the coming decades, leading to increased congestion along many rail corridors. Increased interest in expanded passenger service on shared rail corridors will also create additional capacity demand. However, the nation’s rail lines are still predominantly single track with passing sidings, maki...
